6 Important Types of Dental Specialists
You Need to Know

At The Dental Care Group, we want to make sure you are informed about the dental specialists in our practice. These professionals can help you get your smile back on track, so it is important for us to let you know what services they provide. We all work together as a team at The Dental Care Group, which means that every member of our professional team has their own unique role in helping take care of patients like yourself!

1. General Dentist

The first type of specialist will be the general dentist. That’s right, we consider a General Dentist at The Dental Care Group a specialist. This person focuses on everything related to your teeth including prevention, diagnosis, treatment planning and your cosmetic and restorative needs.

General Dentists are often the first point of contact for patients. There are many different types of problems that general dentists will look out for. Everything from a simple cavity or teeth whitening to more complex treatments such as root canal treatments, crowns, porcelain laminate veneers, Invisalign and much more!

Not only do general dentists treat existing conditions, they also find issues before they become a problem, which is known as preventative dentistry.  This helps our patients avoid unnecessary pain.

General Dentists provide comprehensive care which means determining what should be done right now as well as developing an appropriate plan for future treatments (e.g., braces).

2. Periodontist

A Periodontist is a dentist that specializes in gum diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis. A common issue these professionals address is periodontal or gum treatments which often involve repairing severe infections within the mouth’s soft tissue areas such as the gums and jawbone area.

Periodontists are also specially trained in placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants. These implants are often used to replace missing teeth.

At The Dental Care Group, we provide periodontics for children and adults, so come see us whether you have an issue or are just looking to maintain the health of your gums.

We are very proud of our Periodontist at the Dental Care Group, Dr. Mathew Fien, who lectures to dentists throughout the country on the complex and state of the art periodontal procedures.

3. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

An Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon is a doctor who performs surgery on the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. They are also involved with facial pain causes as well as oral pathology.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons work closely with patients who need their wisdom teeth removed or even jaw reconstruction due to cancer treatment. As if all that wasn’t enough, they can treat all types of diseases, injuries, deformities, or defects that affect the head, neck, jaws, and maxillofacial structures.

They diagnose and manage treatment for tumors in the jawbones as well as facial pain cases like trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve disorder) or headaches.

Our Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Dominique Morel, recently returned back to the Dental Care Group after receiving special training in head and neck trauma.

4. Endodontist

Endodontists are dental experts that perform root canals, but they are also responsible for treating patients with other issues related to their teeth and gums. They have excellent people skills because they need them when dealing with anxious or nervous patients who may be afraid of pain or discomfort.

Endodontic treatment requires knowledge of different procedures including root canal therapy, periradicular surgery, crown lengthening, pulpectomy techniques as well as biomechanics which involves tooth movement studies.

The endodontist’s goal is to save the tooth and prevent it from becoming an extraction or implant. They are able to evaluate if a tooth can be saved by doing proper diagnostic tests that involve x-rays, CT scans as well as evaluating the blood vessels within the root canal system.

Dr. Bo Bui, our Endodontist, brings not just a tremendous skill set to the Dental Care Group, but a calming affect to patients with his unique personality.

5. Prosthodontist

A Prosthodontist is a dental expert who specializes in restoring teeth that have been damaged or missing due to injury, disease or birth defects. This dentist is able to restore the appearance of your smile by using restorative techniques which can be as simple as veneers on front teeth and complex procedures such as full mouth reconstruction.

They may also work closely with orthodontists when it comes time for braces since they help treat many aspects of patients’ mouths by straightening crooked teeth.

Prosthodontists are experts at creating new crowns from natural materials like porcelain so you won’t need to worry about any metal coming in contact with your gums during treatment. Instead, this dentist looks for materials that are both strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Dr. Ambar Pagani limits her practice to complex rehabilitation and when she is not practicing at the Dental Care Group she is a full-time Professor at Nova University School of Dentistry.

6. Pedodontics

Pedodontics is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on the dental care of children from infancy through adolescence. In addition to treating cavities, pediatricians restore decayed or broken teeth as well as treat diseases and injuries of the mouth, jaws, face, and neck.

It is an incredible experience to watch a child grow up with healthy teeth. Dental treatments in pedodontics can involve early intervention such as braces or retainers but also includes preventative work which may consist of simple changes like improved diet and better oral hygiene habits.

Pediatric dentists may also perform:

  • Repairs to baby teeth that were damaged or injured
  • Tooth extractions and other treatments for children with special needs
  • Orthodontic treatment (braces) in cases where the jaws and/or teeth don’t line up correctly
  • Sealants applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars – a plastic-like coating that protects against decay by keeping food particles out of crevices between your child’s back teeth.
  • Fluoride treatments that can help prevent tooth decay in children who are at high risk for cavities

At Dental Care Group Kids, Dr. Dalia Rosenfeld and Dr. Alicia King make dentistry fun for your children and create beautiful smiles in a fearless environment so your children will grow into adults that will love going to the dentist.
