What Is Emergency Dental Care?

Emergency dental care involves urgent treatment for dental issues that require immediate attention to alleviate pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Unlike routine dental visits, emergencies can’t wait for a scheduled appointment.

Our goal is to address your emergency quickly, minimize discomfort, and prevent long-term complications. With state-of-the-art equipment and a patient-first approach, we’re your trusted partner for dental emergencies across South Florida. And, with Saturday hours available at all three locations, we’re here when others aren’t.

Common Dental Emergencies and What to Do

Severe Toothache

A persistent, intense toothache could indicate an infection, abscess, or decay that has reached the nerve of the tooth. Rinse your mouth with warm water, gently floss to remove any trapped debris, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen. Avoid aspirin, as it can thin the blood. Avoid hot or cold foods and call our office immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most time-sensitive emergencies in dentistry. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root, and rinse it gently with water. Try to place it back in the socket if you can. If that’s not possible, store it in milk or saline and get to our office within 30 to 60 minutes. That window is critical for giving the tooth the best chance of being saved.

Cracked or Broken Tooth

A cracked or fractured tooth can cause significant pain and expose sensitive nerves to bacteria and temperature changes. Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce any swelling, and save any tooth fragments you can find. Getting to our office promptly prevents further damage and reduces the risk of infection.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown leaves the underlying tooth vulnerable to decay and sensitivity. Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum to cover the exposed area temporarily, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, and contact us as soon as possible.

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess is a bacterial infection that forms at the root of a tooth or in the surrounding gum tissue, and it demands immediate attention. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the jaw, neck, or bloodstream—a potentially life-threatening situation. Rinse with warm saltwater and call us right away. Fever, facial swelling, or difficulty swallowing are signs to seek emergency care without delay.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts, lacerations, or persistent bleeding in the gums, tongue, or cheeks require urgent evaluation. Rinse with saltwater, apply gauze to control bleeding, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If bleeding does not slow after 15 minutes of consistent pressure, head to our office or an emergency room right away to have your soft tissue injury checked.

Orthodontic Emergencies

A poking wire, broken bracket, or lost aligner may not sound like a traditional emergency, but left unaddressed, these issues can cause soft tissue injury, significant pain, and setbacks in your orthodontic treatment. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges and call us the same day.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Dental Visit

When you arrive at The Dental Care Group for a dental emergency, we work quickly and methodically to get you comfortable and treated. Our team begins with an immediate assessment of your symptoms, taking digital X-rays where needed to get a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface. Pain management comes first. We’ll administer local anesthesia or other appropriate relief before any procedure begins, so you’re never sitting in discomfort longer than necessary.

Once we understand the full extent of the problem, we’ll walk you through your treatment options clearly and honestly. After your procedure, you’ll leave with detailed written aftercare instructions, any necessary prescriptions, and a clear follow-up plan. If you have questions or need to book an emergency appointment, call our Aventura location at (305) 935-2797, Pembroke Pines at (954) 430-2300, or Fort Lauderdale at (954) 963-3706.

The Cost of Emergency Dental Care

The cost of emergency dental care depends on the type and complexity of treatment required. A simple examination and X-rays may run $75 to $250, while more involved procedures like root canal therapy or crown replacement can range higher. The Dental Care Group accepts most major dental insurance plans and offers flexible payment options for patients without coverage. Call any of our locations, and we’ll verify your benefits and walk through financial options before your appointment so there are no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I seek emergency dental care?

Seek emergency dental care for severe tooth pain, facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop, a knocked-out or loose tooth, a broken tooth, or any sign of infection, such as a pimple-like bump on the gums or a foul taste in the mouth. When in doubt, call us, and our dentists will help you determine the right next step.

The ER can manage severe pain and trauma, but lacks the specialized equipment needed for most dental procedures. A dentist is always the better choice for comprehensive emergency care, the exception being truly life-threatening situations like difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling spreading to the neck.
